About Speed Tests
Your Internet connection speed is affected by numerous issues. This information should be used as a reference only. This speed test calculates how long it takes your computer to download a large quantity of data from the Internet and then uses that time to calculate the relative speed of your line. Remember, the speed you signed up for is a burst up to speed. This means that if you signed up for a 768K connection, your line will transfer up to 768K.
There are a number of factors that may affect the speed of your DSL connection. This could include, but is not limited to the following:
- The performance and quality of your computer.
- The time of day you are using your connection.
- The amount of traffic in your area at that time.
- The speed of the website you are trying to connect to.
- The speed of all the links between your system and the site you are trying to connect to.
Iowa Telecom can only solve problems pertaining to the speed of our network. This test is such that it only tests your connection to our network. Generally speaking, you should be getting approximately 85% of the connection speed you ordered. This should be listed on the results page. If you are getting around 85% of the speed you ordered, your connection is performing normally.
Feel free to run the speed test below whenever you feel that you are not getting the connection you are paying for. If you have any questions about the results or your connection in general, please contact Technical Support.
